Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
